The California Competes Tax Credit (CalCompetes) application portal is now open, with $306.6 million available for businesses looking to grow and create jobs in California. Applications are accepted through March 16, 2026, and are submitted online at calcompetes.ca.gov.
What Is the California Competes Tax Credit?
CalCompetes is an income tax credit negotiated between the state and individual businesses that commit to creating jobs and making investments in California. Unlike grants, the credit is tied directly to performance. Businesses must meet their promised hiring and investment benchmarks to receive the full benefit. Credits are awarded competitively and can span up to five years, making them a meaningful long-term financial tool for growing companies.
Key Dates and How to Apply
Applications must be submitted through calcompetes.ca.gov by Monday, March 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. GO-Biz will also host two information sessions for prospective applicants:
- Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at 9:30 a.m.
- Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 3:00 p.m.
What Makes a Competitive Application?
Having helped a client secure a $1 million CalCompetes tax credit last year, the applications that tend to be most successful are ones that tell a clear, credible story about job creation.
GO-Biz evaluates applications across several factors, but the core of a competitive submission is demonstrating how California’s investment through the tax credit directly enables your business to grow its workforce. Reviewers look for:
- A specific, realistic job creation plan
- Evidence that the credit is a meaningful factor in your decision to stay or expand in California
- Wage levels, benefits, and full-time employment commitments that reflect quality jobs
- A sustainable business model that can deliver on its commitments over a multi-year period
The strongest applications connect the dots between the credit and the outcome, showing how funds will be used, what positions will be created, what those jobs will pay, and how the business is positioned to sustain that growth over time.
Is This the Right Fit for Your Business?
CalCompetes is well suited for businesses that are actively hiring, planning to expand operations in California, or considering whether to locate or remain in the state. The application requires detailed information about your workforce plans, financials, and investment projections, so it’s worth taking stock of that information early in the process.
CPRA Strategies has experience navigating the CalCompetes process and building applications that clearly make the case for investment. If you have questions about eligibility or would like guidance on the process, we’re happy to help.
